COLLAPSE, FAINTING & Unconsciousness
- Sudden loss of consciousness
- Marked weakness
- Can be associated with anything from low blood sugar to severe heart disease
- Immediately position the pet on a slight angle with the head down and the hind end elevated
- Cover the pet with a blanket to preserve body heat (unless the pet is exhibiting signs of heat stroke)
- If the pet vomits, make sure he does not inhale any vomit into his lungs by wiping out the mouth
- Seek immediate veterinary attention
- Do not administer anything by mouth - this can be aspirated into the lungs and cause serious problems
- Do not slap the pet or splash cold water on him to try to revive him
- Do not fail to take him to the vet's office if he recovers quickly - several conditions that cause fainting can be very serious and require immediate attention to prevent death.
